Holiday Break Reading Challenge Activity no. 15

New Years' Reflections...

Favorite Aspect of my Blog?
  • I've only been on this blog for about a month, and I got to say. The Blogging World is pretty friendly! I've already met some really awesome bloggers who are kind to new people like me. My favorite aspect of my blog is the comments from all the people. I can't even begin to describe how comments make me super happy! I love getting feedback [I just don't like mean people comments like "You suck!!" You can comment that I suck, but I need a real reason as to WHY I suck.] from people. It's such a nice feeling :) Ok, I'll stop blogging on how comments make me happy. I think I'm getting or I am already annoying.

Any Particular Weekly Meme / Feature YOU Enjoyed that You Plan to Continue in 2010?
  • I enjoyed all my memes in fact. Please check them out in my Weekly Meme schedule in the sidebar. The sidebar post title is "So What's Next?"

Anything You Don't Like in Your Blog That You Want to Fix?
  • Well, I don't really like how my blog is kind of empty [hardly any reviews and memes] but I think it'll change in 2010.

Is There a Blog You Admire and Aspire to Emulate?
  • Well, there is a LOT of blogs that I admire. I'm totally jealous of them because they can all write great reviews with fancy words (I just cannot do that. I'm not good at thinking fancy), make their blogs cool and simple and awesome, have awesomeawesomeawesome content to fill their blog, and they are NICE COOL people that I am admire and aspire to emulate. Some examples? ALL the people I follow. If I don't follow yours, a) I have NOT found out about it yet or b) I may be under the impression that I am following your blog, when I am actually not.

Goals?
  • Become a better writer in blogging reviews and such, get more followers and commenters, and to be able to hold many giveaways in the near future.

Thanks for reading and have a happy New Year!

from lovely miss lucy(:

Goodbye 2009, and Hello 2010!

  • Was 2009 a good, bad, or decent year for you?

Waiting on Wednesday no. 2

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme that was started by Breaking the Spine. It's the time to blog about the upcoming releases of books that we are eagerly waiting for.

This week, the spotlight is on...

Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson

I love the cover! Well, I love the font for "Claire de Lune" because it fits the book and makes it have a pretty, mysterious atmosphere around it. Just by looking at the cover, can you guess what it's about? Well, it's about WEREWOLVES. Ok, just to let you know, that isn't really a spoiler because it's mentioned in the summary. But just because you don't want to know the spoiler before reading the summary down below, I've made the spoiler disappear! I'm amazing, huh? Well, the secret to making the spoiler APPEAR is to highlight.

Now, for all the lovelies who have no clue on what this book is about, here you go:

Christine Johnson’s CLAIRE DE LUNE, in which a teenager learns that she is a werewolf, descended from a long line of female werewolves, and must balance her human and werewolf lives, while tracking down the rogue werewolf preying upon the people of her town.

Pretty short, am I right? I am dying to read this book, aaaand from a scale from 1 to 10 on how excited I am for this book, I'd say I'm on an eleven :)

Fun Stuff to do While Waiting For The Book

Check out Peace Love & Pat's Author Guest Post: Christine Johnson! It's a rockin' post with information on the author herself, and some info on the book! :)

Holiday Break Reading Challenge Activity no. 12 :)

The theme is choosing your favorite books that dealt with animals [no werewolfs and other awesome fantasy creatures!]

My TOP favorite is:

It does deal with REAL animals [IT'S A BUNNY, FOR PETER'S SAKE!] and I love this book so much. I picked it up when I was in 5th or 6th grade at Target. I finished it in one sitting, and I was amazed&happy&satisfied.

So please let this book count, Karin. LET IT :)

Book Summary:

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely.

And then, one day, he was lost.

Kate DiCamillo and Bagram Ibatoulline take us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hoboes' camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the streets of Memphis. And along the way, we are shown a true miracle — that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.

Doesn't this book sound delightful?

Reading into the New Year! :)

I just wanted to share that I'll be participating in the Reading into the New Year, which is hosted by the lovely Kristen @ Bookworming in the 21st Century!

Long story short?
  • The point of this whole palooza (ah, I will never get tired of that word) is to read as 2009 fades into 2010. You can read in the 5 minutes before midnight, or you can read HOURS before the clock strikes twelve. It's that simple. Like Kristen said, it can also be a group activity with your kids or the whole family! It's a super way to have fun for the non-New Year-party people [like me?]
My goal is to read...TWO HOURS :) I think I can reach it though. I'll also try to take pictures and blog a bit on the last day of 2009 to liven things up a bit on my blog :)

Also, Kristen is also giving away a book prize(s) to a random participant! This is so cool!

Well? Watcha waiting for? GO SIGN UP HERE!

I'm also signing up for The New Year Read-a-Thon. It starts at New Year's Eve at 5 p.m. and ends on January 3 at 10 p.m. I plan to do...**SEVEN** hours! :) I hope I surpass it!

What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell

What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell REVIEW

This book gets 4 Hearts

Quick Info?

{ Type of book: Fiction }

{ Number of Pages: 288 }

{ Publisher: Scholastic Press }

{ Source: Bought at Barnes & Noble }

{ Awards: National Book Award for Young People's Literature (2008) and Tayshas High School Reading List (2010) }

{ Age Rating: PG-13 for (kind of) detailed sexual situations }

So, what is the book about?
  • When Evie's father returned home from World War II, the family fell back into its normal life pretty quickly. But Joe Spooner brought more back with him than just good war stories. When movie-star handsome Peter Coleridge, a young ex-GI who served in Joe's company in postwar Austria, shows up, Evie is suddenly caught in a complicated web of lies that she only slowly recognizes. She finds herself falling for Peter, ignoring the secrets that surround him . . . until a tragedy occurs that shatters her family and breaks her life in two. As she begins to realize that almost everything she believed to be a truth was really a lie, Evie must get to the heart of the deceptions and choose between her loyalty to her parents and her feelings for the man she loves. Someone will have to be betrayed. The question is . . . who?

Thoughts?

Wow. This was a great book. After hearing mixed reviews and reading the description, I just had to try this. I bought it, and after starting it, I couldn't put it down. I'll start off with the cover.
  • The cover is stunning. The cover PERFECTLY depicts Evie and the cover title: What I Saw and How I Lied. I love how the lipstick from Evie's o-shaped mouth POPS out from the cover. It totally reminds of a classic black-and-white movie, which I love :)
I think that this book was pretty good. Although some people question why did this even get an NBA (National Book Award), I am NOT one of those people. From my perspective, this is a coming-of-age story in which Evie discovers her sexuality (and loses her innocence!) while slowly untangles the web of lies that has surrounded her.

  • I didn't like Evie that much. (I do have to say that Blundell had done an excellent job on weaving together a realistic character who isn't perfect, but is like a human being.) I mean, what girl would suddenly fall in love with some stranger she met at a pool? Evie barely knows Peter, and suddenly Evie thinks they're soul mates or something. Evie was on the crappy road, but in the end, she makes a right turn, and starts heading for the happy road. (I'm not sure if I made sense on the "road" thing.. :)

  • The plot was original and amazing. This was a huge PLUS for me. There was a butt load of mysteries and secrets that surrounded Evie which made me wonder throughout the whole book. Some of the secrets and lies were answered, but not all of them which makes me wonder. I think that Blundell did a fantastic job on leaving some doors locked though. I would not have been satisfied if all the doors to deceit and secrets were opened. { There is a huge secret that was unlocked in this book. I was shocked because I never predicted it!! }

  • I don't really want to go in-depth of the romance in this book. I think the age rating on the quick info section explains it all. However, not all the sexual situations Evie encountered were MAJOR.

Overall, fantastic book. Blame Evie for the cost of one star (Also, the star ratings for my reviews are totally based on how I enjoyed the book)

All quick info was from TeenReads or from Goodreads. I do NOT claim this info.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? no. 2

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? was started by J. Kaye's Book Blog! It's a lovely meme where you get to see what books I've recently finished, what I'm reading now, and what I'll read next! :)

Recently finished:
  • What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell
I know. I am such a SLOW reader. I'm so busy, I'm only able to read one book at a time...

Currently Reading:
  • City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

What's Next:
  • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
  • NUM8ERS by Rachel Ward

Oh gosh. I am such a slow reader. I have a ton of books to read, but the WHAT'S NEXT books are the books I really want to read next. Now, I'm getting this really bad habit in where I read books when I'm currently reading City of Bones and I DON'T want to do that because it makes me forget what's happening in CoB.

  • I decided to postpone my IMM till next Sunday (things are a bit hectic right now) but I'll post my On My Wishlist sometime in the afternoon along with a What I Saw and How I Lied review. I also be posting on some challenges I've taken up in the afternoon, tonight, or tomorrow.

and....

Here's a little question for you guys! :)

Will you miss 2009, seeing how this is the last time we shall see a single digit year (ex: 2001, 2008) until the year 3000?

On My Wishlist no. 2

On My Wishlist is a weekly meme in which we blog about the books we haven't bought (yet), but have been wanting to read!

Want to do some wishing too? Well, head on over to Book Chick City :)

This week, I WANTWANTWANT The Tension of Opposites by Kristina McBride and The Dark Divine by Bree Despain.

Ah gosh. I have been wanting these books since... forever! I'm TOTALLY jealous of all the people who have ARC or finished copies of these books.

I guess you wondering, "Lucy is so weird. TDD is already out in stores. She should just buy one." Well, to answer your questions, I cannot buy TDD. The bookstore is always out of stock, and the next bookstore that's the closest is half an hour away. I'm also too lazy to order online... Thank God that there's a bunch of contests giving away TDD. I'm DYING to read this book. However, I'm kind of sad because some reviewer posted a SPOILERSPOILERSPOILER on their review, and I READ it. Now I know the effin' secret and there's nothing I can do to make it go away ;_; I won't say who because it would be kind of rude... But whatever, right? Let bygones be bygones.

The Tension of Opposites. It sounds... awesome. A psychological thriller? Baby, I'm all for it! If you guys are interested in mysteries and thrillers, you should totally read The Night I Disappeared by Julie Reece Deaver. I love that book. This was the first book that made my heart pound because I was actually scared of what was going to happen. I read it a looong time ago, so I can't really remember all of it. But, you should go check it out at the library. It's worth it [from my perspective].

Ok, now I'll stop rambling and get on with the summaries :)

The Tension of Opposites by Kristina McBride:

It’s been two years since Noelle disappeared. Two years since her bike was discovered, sprawled on a sidewalk. Two years of silence, of worry, of fear.

For those two long years, her best friend Tessa has waited, living her own life in a state of suspended animation.

Because how can she allow herself to enjoy a normal high school life if Noelle can’t? How dare she have other friends, go to dances, date boys, without knowing what happened to the girl she thought she would share everything with?

And then one day, someone calls Noelle’s house. She’s alive.

A haunting psychological thriller taken straight from the headlines, The Tension of Opposites is a striking debut that explores the emotional aftermath of a kidnapping on the victim, and on the people she left behind.

The Dark Divine by Bree Despain:

Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared--the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood--but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's high school. Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes.

The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy's dark secret...and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it--her soul.

What are you wishing for lately?

Waiting on Wednesday no. 1

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme that was started by Breaking the Spine. It's the time to blog about the upcoming releases of books that we are eagerly waiting for.

This week, the spotlight is on...

Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken! (Look at the cover! Isn't it gorgeous?) This book is released March 23, 2010. Oh gosh. Why March!? March is so far ;_; I'm so jealous of the people who are reading / have read it.

For those of you who have not heard of this, Brightly Woven is about this:

  • Sydelle Mirabil is living proof that, with a single drop of rain, a life can be changed forever. Tucked away in the farthest reaches of the kingdom, her dusty village has suffered under the weight of a strangely persistent drought. That is, of course, until a wizard wanders into town and brings the rain with him.In return for this gift, Wayland North is offered any reward he desires—and no one is more surprised than Sydelle when, without any explanation, he chooses her. Taken from her home, Sydelle hardly needs encouragement to find reasons to dislike North. He drinks too much and bathes too little, and if that isn’t enough to drive her to madness, North rarely even uses the magic he takes such pride in possessing. Yet, it’s not long before she realizes there’s something strange about the wizard, who is as fiercely protective of her as he is secretive about a curse that turns his limbs a sinister shade of black and leaves him breathless with agony. Unfortunately, there is never a chance for her to seek answers.Along with the strangely powerful quakes and storms that trace their path across the kingdom, other wizards begin to take an inexplicable interest in her as well, resulting in a series of deadly duels. Against a backdrop of war and uncertainty, Sydelle is faced with the growing awareness that these events aren’t as random as she had believed—that no curse, not even that of Wayland North, is quite as terrible as the one she herself may carry.

Ok how great does that sound? Am I right or what? [don't answer the "am I right or what" question.]

I am EAGERLY waiting for this delightful looking book. I swear, I would trade or exchange a book for this.

In My Mailbox no. 1

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren in which I talk about what I received in the mailbox recently! :)

This week, I got an ARC of Numbers by Rachel Ward and a Give Up The Ghost bookmark. I have been dying to read Numbers for a looong time, for I just love mysterious books like that. Expect a review for Numbers soon! [first picture]

I got a package from Sourcebooks which contained a Dreaming Anastasia poster, a Beautiful Dead ARC, a PB copy of Dreaming Anastasia, and two Dreaming Anastasia bookmarks. I am pretty psyched to read Dreaming Anastasia because I am a huge fan of learning about Anastasia and her family. I am also just as crazy about Beautiful Dead for it sounds awesome! The person who sent me this awesome package was pretty nice because I didn't expect to see Beautiful Dead and some bookmarks and a poster! I am completely GRATEFUL for this week! [second picture]

I went to Barnes & Noble yesterday, and when I went to the YA book section, there they were. All the books that I have been wanting was right before my eyes. The only thing that was standing between me and the lovely books were the PRICES :( I only brought $9 to get a nice cheap book, but most books I wanted were HC ;_; I asked my mom to lend me $10, and she did. After some hard thinking, it came down to two books, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell. I think you know what book I ended up choosing ;) [third picture]

How can this not sound interesting?

By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters

By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters REVIEW

This book gets 5 Hearts
Book release date? January 2010

Source? ARC [advanced reader copy] supplied by author

What is the book about?

Daelyn Rice is broken beyond repair, and after a string of botched suicide attempts, she's determined to get her death right. She starts visiting a website for "completers" - www.through-the-light.com.
While she's on the site, Daelyn blogs about her life, uncovering a history of being bullied from kindergarten. When she's not on the web, Daelyn's at her private school, known as the freak who doesn't talk.

Then a boy named Santana begins to sit with her after school, while she's waiting for her parents to pick her up. Even though she makes it clear that she wants to be left alone, Santana won't give up. And it's too late for Daelyn to be letting people into her life. Isn't it?

National Book Award Finalist Julie Anne Peters shines a light on how bullying can push young people to the very edge.

  • Thoughts
I think this is one of the best books I have ever read. Julie had done a fantastic job on vividly describing Daelyn's brutal memories, which made the words just jump off the page! Julie had also made the characters as if she had described real people, unlike the very few authors who create flat 2-D characters who seem to have fake emotions. When I was reading this book, it took a lot of effort just to put it down. When I wasn't reading the book, I was trying to predict what will happen in the book next. For me, some books are totally easy to predict. This book, not so much, which is pretty good becase I LOVE unpredictable stories :) The characters had amazing dialouge. I could actually imagine a suicidal teenager saying what Daelyn was saying throughout the whole book, and Santana was just as good. I liked Santana's dialouge the most because his was funny and dorky-cute, not too bad-boy (don't get me wrong, I heart bad boys!)

Daelyn was also funny and awesome like Santana. She had a lot to say, even though she couldn't talk (you can find out why if you read this book!)

  • One of my favorite parts from Daelyn: "Dad reaches over and cranks up the volume on the CD he's playing. It's techno, for God's sake. My stomach hurts from cramps anyway, but that music makes me want to hurl. I think he thinks it'll make him seem cool. News you can use, Dad. Losers aren't cool."
Santana was an interesting character. Like a lot of books, the main love interest for a girl is a bad boy. Well, not this book. Santana was geeky-cute, but not like a math geek kind of cute. He is hi-larious in some parts of the book. His relationship between him and his mother is another funny sight to see. They argue a lot, but his mom would love his annoying self anyways. Now I present to you one of my favorite quotes from Santana:
  • "'I'm sorry, he's printed in green pen, 'I didn't know you couldn't talk. I just figured you had amazing self-control.'"
(Sorry if I quoted Santana wrong. I have no idea how to quote quotes.)
  • I also loved the funny, awkward, sweet romance between Daelyn and Santana. Their times together was adorable! Daelyn would always try to figure out ways to escape their times together, but Santana would keep persisting on and on.

All in all, this was a DELIGHTFUL read that deserves 5 Hearts.

I hope you guys get to read this when you get the chance! Besides, if you're sad that this book isn't in stores yet, January 2010 isn't that far from now! When January 2010 comes, I beg of you, buy this book. It's awesome.

On My Wishlist no. 1

On My Wishlist is a weekly meme in which we blog about the books we haven't bought (yet), but have been wanting to read!

Want to do some wishing too? Well, head on over to Book Chick City :)

I've been wanting to read these three books for forever :)

These books are:

The Line by Teri Hall

Rachel lives with her mother on The Property. The good thing about living there is that it’s far from the city where the oppressive government is most active. The bad thing, at least to most people, is that it’s close to the Line—an uncrossable section of the National Border Defense System, an invisible barrier that encloses the entire country.

She can see the Line from the greenhouse windows, but she is forbidden to go near it. Across the Line is Away, and though Rachel has heard many whispers about the dangers there, she’s never really believed the stories. Until the day she hears a recording that could only have come from across the Line.

Dirty Little Secrets by C.J. Omololu

From the outside, Lucy’s home looks normal. Inside the front door is where the secrets begin. Towering piles of newspaper and magazines. Bags of junk flooding every inch of open space. The line of mold creeping along the window frames. This is what she’s kept from everyone—that her mother’s compulsive hoarding has reduced their lives to garbage . . . literally.

With only two years until graduation, Lucy finally feels like a normal life is within her grasp, and her new best friend, Kaylie, and her longtime crush, Josh, make a future feel almost possible.

Then one morning Lucy comes home to find something she never expected, something that will change her life forever. And she must ask herself—how far can she really go to keep the family secrets safe?

Greetings, Earthlings! (or do you prefer just "hello"?)

Ok, welcome to my blog, Delightful Reviews! I am over excited to be reviewing books and such just like all book bloggers. I cannot wait to get started for I already have read some books and I am dying to just do a review for them! I'll soon do weekly memes like In My Mailbox, Waiting on Wednesdays, etc. [note: I did NOT create these memes, nor do I claim that I own these memes in any way possible.]
